Established around 1906 with the extension of an electric streetcar service which linked the two areas, South Park was one of the first suburbs of Downtown San Diego. Growth really took off between 1913 and 1945 with the development of the historic 30th & Fern commercial center. Today, the neighborhood has an eclectic mix of over 70 independent boutiques, cafes, and taverns (including San Diego’s oldest tavern, Hamilton’s) – all of which are very walkable from the surrounding neighborhoods that house Craftsman and Spanish Colonial Revival style homes, condos and duplexes.
